If you have a cable box, you can run the red/white audio cables straight from the cable box to your receiver for stereo.

I got a new receiver with optical inputs when I got my first HDTV. But unless you are using an antenna and the tv's internal tuner, only stereo will pass from the tv's optical output. To get surround, you have to use optical cable from an HD cable box to a receiver.

So you have the choices of running the red/white out of a cable box if you have one or getting a receiver with optical inputs on it. Many receivers are available on craigslist for less than $75 which would work for you.
