my key will not shut off the battery!?
78 chevy truck was having starting problems-finicky. Replaced the battery. Removed starter, checked at shop, was fine, put it back in with a shim. Pulley under alternator was shaking a bit, tightened it but didn't help--still shaking. Truck ran great for a couple weeks. This morn, almost turned over (normal cold start), then click, then nothing. Tried to jumpstart it, the battery engaged on my truck with the charge from other truck without turning my key. My truck started with help of key but wouldn't entirely turn off when key removed; belts still turned although engine didn't seem to be running. Had to remove battery wire to turn off truck. Could my solenoid be bad even though it was just OK'ed two weeks ago? The battery/starter/alternator were all checked at Sears and only the battery needed replacing. Could the alternator be bad now? The wires, including the ground, all seem fine also.
It sounds to me like you have a complete circuit bypassing the key which caused your battery to discharge. The solenoid is good because it started your truck with a jump and disengaged once started. I would check for a complete circuit which would bypass the ignition causing the vehicle to start once the jump was applied. Check around the ignition switch and starter for wires touching.
