does intermediate open holed flute really sound better?
ive been playing my beginners flute every since i started playing..which has been about 4-5 years
does having an intermediate flute really make a cleaner clearer sound? because the girl next to me has one and her sounds beautiful and frankly i can never play like that.
so just wundering can the flute really affect it? or is it just the player?
I am a professional flutist, teacher, and competition judge in NY since 1971. Just because it has open hole, it does not make the flute better-sounding. The real determinant is the headjoint, its metal content (silver - or gold - instead of plated) and the overall workmanship of the instrument. You have to LEARN how to handle an open-hole flute, as well as a B-footjoint, if it has one, and any other keys. Advanced players use them to make REALLY difficult passage smoother - yes, then can do it the hard way, but some additional features make is easier. The big difference is the skill of the player. Sometimes my students will hear me rip thru a passage in their music and say "Sure, YOU can play it on a ten-thousand-dollar flute!" - so I say "Hand me YOUR flute!" and as long as their flute works (no leaks, etc.) I can still play it well. It's the PLAYER, not the instrument.
