How do I stop my rear car door from leaking at the bottom?
I have a 2004 Cityrover 1.4 Sprite. For the past 2 weeks, whenever it rains, water leaks onto the floor from the bottom of the rear car door. The water is leaking between the metal part of the door and the clip-on door panel. I now have the door panel off and am awaiting guidance. There is a plastic sheet inside the door but it doesnt look to be in very good condition. Any suggestions?
That plastic sheet you see is not to prevent water leaking into the inside of the vehicle. It is to prevent ride draft from entering the cabin as well as provide insulation from exterior temperatures and noise.
Your leak could possibly be due to some missing or damaged weather stripping located inside where the door closes to the frame of the car. Examine all weather stripping and make sure it is securely glued down to the door frame all around the perimeter. Also, on the top of the door there is additional weather stripping that is most likely attached to the actual door, not the door's frame (unless the top of the actual door is the top of the window in which case the weather stipping I'm refering to would be where the window rolls up into). If this is damaged in any way or missing water can bypass the rest of the weather stripping and leak down the door's frame and then exit where you are claiming it is leaking from. But, if this were the case, water would most likely be leaking in from various other places, like near the top of the window, so I doubt this is where your problem lies.
More importantly, examine the weather stripping that is located on the outside of the window right where it goes down into the door. If enough water is leaking into the interior of the door because of this stripping being damaged or missing, it could be running down the various parts inside the door (including the plastic sheet you claim is not in very good condition) and then water would definately be leaking from where you say it is leaking. This is actually what I'm almost positive your problem is, but you should examine all weather stripping just to be sure.
