I want to install a new radio/CD player in my car because the original radio is broken.?
The only thing is I have a 96 Mercury Sable and the radio is connected to the same giant panel as the heat, so I can't do an in-dash car radio. Are there other options, like radios that can sit on top of the dash board or something? I haven't had a radio for 6 months now and I would really like to have one again!
They make faceplates or adaptors for putting a new stereo into a car that has a wacky stock stereo size/shape.
Changing out a stock stereo can be kind of tricky, so you might want to find someone who knows what they are doing - you might need a special tool for removing the old deck (at least if you care about preserving the way the dash looks - I took out a tape deck one time with a crowbar - which actually only left a few small marks).
Select your new stereo (they come in all varieties - Sony is a good inexpensive one, but it's totally up to your tastes, budget, and what kind of music you are listening to). Get the faceplate adpator and a wiring adaptor/harness - that will allow you to just plug it into the power/speakers in the car - otherwise you have to figure all the wires out - underdash wiring is kind of crazy, especially since most stock stereos dim with the dash lights.
Good luck!
