On GPS systems, how do the DVDs (or chips) store the maps?
I am looking into buying a GPS system for my car, and I would like to know how much information is stored on the DVDs which show the maps. For example, I live in California, so will I need a bunch of DVDs for all the areas in California, or will it be simply one DVD on its own?
GPS units don't use DVDs. They have internal memory and/or they use memory storage cards, such as SD (SecureDigital). I have a handheld legacy Magellan (SportTrak Map). It has a limited amount of internal memory - I don't know if it would have enough for even the entire State of California. When I travel to a new area I have to upload the local region from my pc. It's okay for boating and hiking, but I also have a much newer car GPS - a TomTom ONE (TT1). The TT1 holds all the data required to produce a complete road atlas of North America in its internal memory, including something like 1 million Points of Interest (POI). the POI database includes things like restaurant addresses and phone numbers, gas stations, monuments, shopping centers, pharmacies, post offices, etc. With a device like the TT! you would not need extra memory storage - California is pre-installed.
Note: There are older GPS units that required one to load maps onto a laptop. You would place the antenna on your car's dashboard and plug the other end into the laptop. Are you referring to this type of GPS? The maps would have been on CDs.
Note 2: I read somewhere recently that any "display" (laptop, dvd player, gps, etc.) is illegal in California if visible from the front seat of the car. Is this true?
