Is riding Bike/Scooter in winter in central New York/Syracuse Area feasible?
I recently moved to Syracuse, NY and live about 2 or so miles from my job. I have license, but no car because I don't really need one, I am able to save even more money than Geico by having no insurance at all, and feel like I can help the environmental crisis, especially in light of the BP Oil Disaster. A few options I have are to get a regular bike, electric bike, or moped/scooter. The bus around here is about $50/mo. with a bus pass, and about the same if I just pay the fare. I plan on being in the area for 14 months or so, so it adds up to about $700 that I could put towards something that was more flexible and possibly more "green".
Anyway, the question here is for those who live in central New York state or the Syracuse area. Could I even drive these modes of transportation for an approx. 2+ mile commute during what I am told is a very harsh winter season?
I would say no, but if you can take the bus you should be OK.
Very funny geico reference by the way!
The thing with Syracuse winters isn't the amount of snow, it's that it is almost always snowing somewhat during the lake effect conditions. Not heavy, but enough to make it a little bit slippery and tougher to see if you're on a bike/scooter. Also the roads effectively narrow from the volume of snow, so that makes it tougher to use these devices even if the road is dry and the sun is shining.
I would say get your bike/scooter and use public transportation when the weather is bad, the buses there are pretty good. I just wouldn't plan on using the bike much in the winter, it will rarely be good conditions for it (if it's typical Syracuse weather).
Make sure you try Dinosaur Barbeque, and the bars in Armory Square are great.
