Romex as speaker wire?
All speaker wire is stranded cable. I'm wondering why? Why not use solid core Romex. A 250 foot roll of 12-2 romex is way cheaper than that much 12 gauge speaker wire. I don't hard-wire outlets and switches in "lamp cord", why do we wire speakers that way? I know better "in wall" speaker cables have twisted conductors which is supposed to cut down on electromagnetic field interference from other nearby electric lines, I believe. I'm not necessarily talking about "in wall" applications, though. (Don't tell me about flexibility, I want to know about sound quality.) Thanks.
I wouldn't use Romex as speaker wire, mainly because of
the difficulty in making good connections with it.
One advantage of stranded wire for speakers is that it is
much easier to secure under screws or binding posts;
another is that the surface area provided is considerably larger
because the strands allow the end to flatten out as pressure is applied.
If you were to use Romex for speaker wiring inside a wall,
someone else may later mistake it for part of the power wiring
in the house and connect it to a live circuit, thereby creating
an extremely dangerous situation.
