Can i hard wire a sat nav and fm transmitter into the car?
My girlfriend just got me a sat nav for christmas and it comes with a cig lighter power supply, Id like to add an fm transmitter that i can get from ebay which also has a cig lighter supply to take advantage of the mp3 player feature and play it through the car stereo through the headphone socket on the nav.
1. will the mp3 work through the transmitter with a headphone socket (there is a headphone jack)?
2. can i hardwire both to the 12v supply (from the stereo or fusebox for example)?
3. this obviously means cutting the cig lighter plug off the power cords or can they be made?
Thanks for taking the time to read through this
In answer to the 3 parts of your question....
1. The fm transmitters work by plugging them into your mp3 player and transmitting them on a selected radio frequency which you know to have no local radio stations broadcasting on. You then tune your car stereo into that frequency to receive the signal. If the sat nav has a headphone socket, then yes, you should be able to connect the transmitter no problem.
2. Yes, you can hardwire extra devices through your fusebox as there are always extra connections available. However, I would suggest that as you weren't sure whether you could do this, you would be better off getting it done by a professional.
3. If you were going to connect these permanently, then yes, you would need to cut the plugs off and use some sort of terminal connectors to connect them to the power. Again, the professional can do this very easily.
However..... rather than going all out for rewiring your car straight away, how about trying a double Cigarette Lighter Socket? You can get them in various types for less than a tenner. Here are a couple:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=217553&criteria=lighter%20socket&doy=19m12
This would mean you could also transfer them easily to a second car should you need to at short notice without having to disconnect wiring etc.
Even if you do decide to go ahead and rewire later, this way you can test out the headphone socket theory and if you are not happy with it, you haven't lost out. If you buy the adapter locally, you could even return it for a full refund if it works out and you don't think you need to keep it.
Good luck with your project.
