Why was anti-Semitism used during the middle ages?
I would like to know what led to the anti-Semitism of the Jews and why it began.
First the church blamed the Jews for Christ's death. While it should have been the Romans, the Vatican was in Rome and often the Pope was Italian.
Second the Jews stayed to themselves. They choose to live in ghettos (old term, place where Jewish law ruled) spoke a different language, had different customs and dress. Clearly they didn't blend in with the rest of the population.
Third they were moneylenders. The church forbid Christians to lend money and charge interest. About the only group that did have cash and was able to lend money were the Jews. Capital was required to build the fancy cathedrals, the castles and equip the knights. It often was Jewish money.
Tagging on to the money lending, Nobles about to go off to a crusade often arranged riots that killed or drove off the Jews. What better way to clear your debts?
