My 4 1/2 month old sleeps well through the night-but during the day will only sleep in the stroller or car??
I'm learning the "let him cry" routine...but other than guessing that he seems tired-I don't know when he NEEDS to sleep.
Watch for rubbing eyes, yawning, starting to get whiney or frustrated easily for signs that he is tired. My son was the same way because I didn't know what to look for until he got older. I used to go to the store at nap time just so he would sleep 
Just keep trying the crib, he will get used to it soon. Try white noise or the same routine you do at night at nap time and make the room darker if you can. My son started taking good naps in his crib around 5 months, but he still goes in the swing on occasion if he won't nap!
